待つこととは。オキの耳から

山では「待つ」という行動を課せられる時がある。

山頂で雲が晴れることを待つこともあるし、風が止むのを待つこともある。

遅れた仲間を待つこともあるし、渋滞した鎖場の順番を待つこともある。

食事の時間を今か今かと待つこともあるし、一心不乱に歩き、次のトイレに到着することを待つこともある。

待つことが功を奏することもあるし、危険を呼ぶこともある。

結局のところ、待つこととはなにかに期待していることなのだと思う。

雲が流れ、トマの耳が出て歓声が上がった。

What it means to wait. From Oki’s ears

In the mountains, there are times when we are forced to wait. Sometimes I wait for the clouds to clear at the summit, or for the wind to die down. Sometimes I wait for late companions, or for my turn at a congested chain ladder. Sometimes I wait impatiently for mealtime, or walk single-mindedly, waiting to arrive at the next toilet. Waiting can sometimes pay off, and sometimes it can invite danger. In the end, I think waiting is about hoping for something. The clouds cleared, Tom’s ears appeared, and cheers erupted. My first snowy mountain. Tanigawa-dake.
